Auntie Ethel Full Questline: Save Mayrina & Help Mayrina | Baldur’s Gate 3

This article will guide you through the entire questline of “Auntie Ethel” in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Auntie Ethel 1st Encounter

Auntie Ethel will initially appear south of Blighted Village, where she is accused by two young men of being responsible for the abduction of their sister Mayrina. Here you can choose the below options:

  • Don’t get involved: Auntie Ethel kills both brothers with magic and teleports to her teahouse.
    • “This is nothing to do with me. Goodbye”
  • Side with the Brothers: Auntie Ethel disappears to her teahouse. The brothers refuse your help in searching for their sister.
    • “You’re lying; you have seen this girl
  • Side with Auntie Ethel: The brothers attack you right away.
    • “Lower your weapons. She’s just an old woman”

Confront Auntie Ethel in Riverside Teahouse

Make your way to the Riverside teahouse to once again meet Auntie Ethel.

Inside, you’ll discover her holding Mayrina captive. The way Auntie Ethel greets you will be affected by your previous interaction with her.

  • You have the option to inquire about Mayrina, but Auntie Ethel will issue a threat, warning you to stay out of her affairs. If you persist or inform Mayrina of her brother’s fate, Auntie Ethel will teleport her and reveal her true form before vanishing behind the furnace, exposing her secret base.
  • If you stay out of Mayrina, ask about the parasite-removal procedure. Then accepting the procedure will result in losing your eye, but the parasite won’t be removed.

Enter the Hidden Passage in the Fireplace

Go down the hidden stairwell where Auntie Ethel disappears.

Overgrown Tunnel

You will arrive in the Overgrown Tunnel, where you will discover Auntie Ethel in her old hag form. She’ll ask you to leave her and disappear again.

Entrance Galley Gnarled Door

Continue inside the Overgrown Tunnel to reach a Gnarled Door. This door will reveal visions of people killed by the hag, but will not open. To pass through Gnarled Door grab the Whispering Masks on the table beside the Gnarled Door. Equip the mask to any of your characters to pass through Gnarled Door

By positioning your camera beyond the door and clicking on the opposite side, you can proceed past it.

After passing through the door, remove the Whispering Mask right away. Auntie Ethel has mental control over this mask. If you do not remove the mask, she will force you to assault your teammates.

After passing through the Gnarled Door, kill enemies that spawn before heading south and then west to discover a waterfall.

Jump across the gap in the waterfall to find gas clouds. To deal with the gas, set it on fire and cross it right away. Or you will need to jump away from the gas clouds to avoid it and the traps.

Rescue Mayrina (Bring down the Cage)

After passing through each of the gas pits, you’ll enter a new region called the Ancient Abode, where you’ll find Mayrina in a wooden hanging cage.

Following the cutscene, the battle with Auntie Ethel begins. She will ignite Mayrina’s cage, so use ice or water-based items to extinguish the fire.

When Auntie Ethel is low on health, she will try to offer you a deal of a permanent bonus on an Ability Score of your choosing. You can accept the offer or can refuse it and continue attacking her until she’s dead.

After defeating Auntie Ethel, interact with Control Orb to bring Mayrina down.

Help Mayrina

Mayrina will be disappointed regardless of how you deal with Auntie Ethel due to her broken deal. After fighting Auntie Ethel, go to the Acrid Workshop and collect the Bitter Divorce wand.

Bring the Wand to Mayrina

Using the Mushroom Circle in the Acrid Workshop to leave the area and speak with Mayrina at her husband’s coffin.

You may tell her about the Bitter Divorce wand and how you might be able to bring him back to life. Choosing to revive Mayrina’s husband will result in an undead version being revived.

Depending on what you want to do with the wand, you have a few more options. Choosing one of these will ultimately end the quest, but it will have an effect on the final award you can earn.
