Baldur’s Gate 3: Lift the Shadow Curse Quest Guide

This article will guide you to complete all the objectives of the quest “Lift the Shadow Curse” in Baldur’s Gate 3. Lift the Shadow Curse is a Quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 that is tied to Halsin and is available during Act 2.


Quest Start

You can initiate this side quest by speaking to Halsin in camp during Act 2. He will only show up at camp if he joined you after saving him back in Act 1.

Halsin will ask you to locate Thaniel in order to lift the shadow curse.

Look for clues as to Thaniel’s whereabouts

Thaniel’s location is tied to the sidequest “Wake Up Art Cullagh” in the Last Light Inn where you need to kill Boss Malus Thorm to acquire Battered Lute. You will encounter a sleeping guy named Art Cullagh in the Last Light Inn.

Enter the Last Light Inn, then the door on the right to discover Art Cullagh unconscious. If you talk to Halsin, he will recommend finding a trigger that will return the man back to the present.

Investigate the House of Healing

Head to the House of Healing which is located north of the Grand Mausoleum in Reithwin Town where you need to battle with Malus Thorm. Refer to the below location.

Malus Thorm is a disguised Mind Flayer posing as a doctor and he is performing some surgical experiments on patients inside the House of Healing.

It’s advisable to use persuasion to convince Malus Thorm to have his nurses ”practice” their surgical operating skills on themselves – this results in the nurses stabbing each other and finally and Malus Thorm stabbing himself to death.

Initiate the discussion with Malus Thorm by directing the conversation that you are a student. Choose from the following dialogue options:

A student, yes. Do please enlighten me.

Successfully pass the first investigation check, which requires a score of 14.

[Investigation ] Examine the sisters and their implements”

“Their blades are uneven. Efficient surgery will require further training.”

Successfully pass the persuasion check, which requires a score of 21, and sisters will start stabbing each other and killing each other.

“[Persuasion] Why not have them horn their skills on each other?”

Next, Successfully pass [Wizard][Deception] check, which requires a score of 21

“[Wizard][Deception] My magic has blinded me – I see now that Shar is the only path. Show me how – I”

Malus Thorm will die by stabbing himself in the eyes. Go and loot the body of Malus Thorm.

Search the remains of Malus Thorm to discover various valuable items, including a Battered Lute.

Take this lute to Cullagh and play a few notes to wake him up. At this time Halsim will also join the conversation. This will heal the Shadow-Cursed Lands and the quest will end.

Play Art’s lute to wake him up, he’ll want to meet with Halsin. Return to camp and inform Halsin that you know the location of Thaniel and take him to Art. Halsin will then ask you to meet him at the lakeshore which is located north of the Last Light Inn.

Meet Halsin by the Lakeshore

Meet Halsin at the lakeshore. He will enter a portal that you must protect from three waves of enemies. If the portal is destroyed, Halsin and Thaniel will die and you’ll fail in the quest.

Halsin will return with Thaniel when you successfully defend the portal. Return to the camp to meet with Halsin. He’ll tell you about Thaniel’s missing half – Oliver.

Meet Halsin at Camp

Oliver who is Thaniel’s other half, may be found in an abandoned house near the Shadowed Battlefield waypoint.

When you ask Oliver to reunite with Thaniel. He will refuse and will open a portal. Follow him through the portal to discover Oliver inside a Nightdome, surrounded by his so-called family. You must defeat him by destroying his dome.

After you’ve destroyed the Nightdome, talk to Oliver and tell him to reunite with Thaniel back at camp.

Kill Ketheric Thorm, Speak to Halsin at the Camp, & Leave for Baldur’s Gate

Finally, meet Halsin at the camp, where Thaniel will tell you that killing Ketheric Thorm is the only way to fully lift the shadow curse.
