Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Did You Let Renoir Kill Gustave? Truth or Lie Choice Explained

In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, one important moment will test your character’s choices and have lasting effects on your relationships with key NPCs. When you speak to Maelle, she will ask you a tough question: “Did you let Renoir kill Gustavag, or could you have saved him?” The answer to this question has two options, each leading to different outcomes in the game.

Option 1: Tell the Truth

When you choose to tell Maelle the truth, admitting that you let Gustavag die, you’ll open up a more honest path in your relationship with her. Maelle will appreciate your honesty, even though the truth might be hard to hear. This decision allows you to progress in your relationship with Maelle, increasing her trust in you. As your relationship grows, you’ll eventually unlock the Gradient Attack.

Option 2: Lie to Maelle

If you decide to lie to Maelle, claiming that you arrived too late to save Gustavag, the relationship takes a darker turn. Although Maelle will be grateful for the lie in the moment, she will soon figure out that you weren’t being truthful. The trust between you will be broken, and your relationship with her will suffer. This choice will prevent you from unlocking the Gradient Attack, and you’ll miss out on this valuable combat skill.

Which Option is Better?

Choosing to tell the truth is the better option if you want to unlock the Gradient Attack and have a strong relationship with Maelle. This will make your journey through Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 smoother and more rewarding, as building relationships with characters can lead to helpful upgrades and bonuses.
