Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – How to Get and Use the Old Key

In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, one of the earliest mystery items you can find is the Old Key. This Old key unlocks a hidden Journal in Old Lumière during Maelle’s solo section. This guide will walk you through exactly how to get the Old Key and where to use it later in your adventure.

How to Get the Old Key in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

You can obtain the Old Key during the Festival sequence near the beginning of the game. As you make your way down the festival steps, look to your left, where you’ll find three vendor stalls. Each one offers a different reward in exchange for a Token.

You’ll begin the festival with one Token, and need to collect two more before moving on:

  • One Token is rewarded for answering correctly.
  • The second bonus Token comes from Maelle, who gives it to you when you speak with her at the docks.

With a Token in hand, head to the stall on the far right. Here, Colette will offer you a strange and mysterious item: the Old Key in return for a Token.

Where to Use the Old Key

Progress through the main quest, and you’ll reach a new region known as Old Lumière (much later in the game). This is where the Old Key finally comes into play.

Starting from the “Left Street” Rest Point, follow the path on the left side and pass through a broken archway.

At the fork ahead, you’ll spot a windmill-like wheel straight in front of you. Instead of going forward, take the right path toward a dead end, then drop down onto the pipe below.

Once inside, turn around to find a grated gate with a Grandiose Chroma Catalyst behind it. Use the Old Key to unlock the gate and collect the item.
