Step 1: Kill an Innocent NPC
To join the Dark Brotherhood, the player must kill an innocent NPC—someone who hasn’t attacked you first.
Step 2: Sleep & you will be visited by Lucien
Next, sleep in a safe bed (like in a home or an inn). While sleeping, you will wake up to see Lucien Lachance. He’ll congratulate you for being a ruthless killer and offer to let you join the Dark Brotherhood.
He will give you a quest called “A Knife in the Dark” where he will ask to eliminate an NPC named Rufio, who is hiding at the Inn of Ill Omen, south of the Imperial City.
Step 3: Kill Rufio
Head to the Inn of Ill Omen, located on the road south of the Imperial City. Rufio is in the private quarter, which is in the basement.
Use the hatch inside the inn to enter the basement, where you’ll find him asleep in a bed. Take him out to complete the task.
Step 4: Join the Dark Brotherhood
After you’ve killed Rufio, sleep in a bed again, and Lucien will appear once more. Speak with Lucien, and you’ll officially become a member of the Dark Brotherhood.
