If you’re taking part in the Fake Fresh Event in World of Warcraft Classic: Season of Discovery (SoD), you’ll likely want to stop leveling once you reach the current level cap. Fortunately, the game has added an option that lets you disable experience gain so you can stay at your chosen level. This guide explains how to lock your level, where to find the required NPCs, and how to enable experience gain.
How to Lock Your Experience in WoW Classic SoD
To lock experience gain, the player simply needs to speak with an Experience Lock NPC named Grendag Brightbeard.
- Travel to one of the Experience Lock NPCs.
- Speak with the NPC.
- Select “I no longer wish to gain experience.”
- Confirm your choice.

Once activated:
- Your character will stop earning experience.
- Your experience bar disappears from the UI.
- You can continue completing quests, dungeons, and other activities without leveling up.
If you decide to level again, simply return to the same NPC and choose the option to start gaining experience once more.
Horde Player – Experience Lock NPC Locations
Horde players can use NPC Grendag Brightbeard, who appears in multiple cities.
Thunder Bluff (Recommended)
Thunder Bluff is currently the most reliable location.
- Zone: Mulgore
- Location: Near the large pool of water in Thunder Bluff.

Speak with Grendag Brightbeard and choose the option to stop gaining experience.

Orgrimmar
Grendag Brightbeard can be found in:
- City: Orgrimmar
- Location: Near the central bonfire.
Undercity
An experience-lock NPC is also available in Undercity. While the exact location may be harder to find, Horde players can also use this NPC to disable experience gain.
Alliance Experience Lock NPC Location
Alliance players should travel to Ironforge.
Ironforge
- Zone: Dun Morogh
- Area: Forlorn Cavern
Inside the Forlorn Cavern, locate Grendag Brightbeard and interact with him. Choose the option to stop gaining experience, and your level will immediately be locked.
How to Unlock Experience Again
Whenever you’re ready to continue leveling:
- Return to the same NPC.
- Speak with them.
- Choose the option to resume gaining experience.
Your experience bar will reappear, and you’ll continue earning XP normally.
Why Lock Your Level?
Many players participating in the Fake Fresh Event choose to lock their level because it allows them to:
- Stay within the event’s current level bracket.
- Play with friends without out-leveling them.
- Experience content as intended for each phase.
- Prepare gear before progressing to the next level cap.
It’s an easy way to enjoy the progression pace without accidentally advancing beyond the community’s target level.
