In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you’ll frequently encounter strange, colorful spikes called Paint Spikes. These Paint Spikes block hidden paths, secret areas, shortcuts, etc. However, you can’t break them with regular attacks. To shatter these Paint Spikes, you’ll need a special ability called Paint Break. This guide explains how to unlock the Paint Break ability by finding four Lost Gestrals in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Where to Find the Four Lost Gestrals
You can unlock the Paint Break Ability by bringing four Lost Gestrals to an NPC named Sastro, located at your camp. There are 10 Lost Gestrals in total, but you only need 4 to unlock Paint Break.
Lost Gestral 1 – Outside Esquie’s Nest
The first Lost Gestral can be found just outside Esquie’s Nest. Look for a landmark that resembles a sun symbol on the map—this is the entrance to Esquie’s Nest. The Gestral will be sitting just outside the structure.
Lost Gestral 2 – East of Stone Wave Cliffs
The second Lost Gestral is located east of the Stone Wave Cliffs. When you arrive at the cliffs, head east past a few enemies. You’ll find the Gestral tucked into a niche behind the cliffs, near some rocks.
Lost Gestral 3 – Near the White Tree Portal (Act 2)
The third Lost Gestral can be found in Act 2, near the White Tree Portal. This one requires that you’ve unlocked the ability to swim. Once you can swim, head to the island near the White Tree Portal. Look for a small rocky ledge with miniature trees and decorative vases just past the portal. The Gestral is hiding there in a little corner near the edge of the rock.
Lost Gestral 4 – Between Forgotten Battlefield and Monoco’s Station
The fourth Lost Gestral is located between the Forgotten Battlefield and Monoco’s Station. First, make your way through the Forgotten Battlefield, then continue forward into the overworld area. Keep an eye out for a merchant known as The Strobami. Once you find him, look for two trees standing near his stall. The Lost Gestral is right in front of those trees
After collecting all four Lost Gestrals, return to your camp and speak with Sastro. He’ll unlock the Paint Break ability after receiving our Lost Gestrals.
