Starting Location

This quest can be started in Mountain Shrine. For this travel north of the Checkpoint Border Town until you reach the Ancient Battleground. Continue north to Worldsend Cavern, then along Shrine Corridor to reach Mountain Shrine. Climb the stairs to find the Sphinx at the top.

Answer the sphinx’s riddles

The player must complete all 10 of the Sphinx’s Riddles in this sidequest.

The Riddle of Eyes

“Our eyes are our allies, yet oft they betray, for eyes tell lies, so I advise, and thence do lead astray. Yet how will your eyes advise you? Venture through yonder door, and retrieve that which is of greatest value.

In this puzzle, the player must bring back the most valuable item in the area. For this, enter the chamber downstairs, immediately turn around, and look up above the door to see a chest. This chest holds Sealing Phial. Give Sealing Phial to the Sphinx

Reward: Wakestone

The Riddle of Madness

Love is as twin to madness, they say. They are bound fast, as night is to day. So bring forth your most beloved to me, that I might gauge the depth of your insanity.

For this give your main pawn to Sphinx. Place the main pawn on the platform and talk to the Sphinx. You can also place a character you have romanced like Ulrika. Place a Portcrystal near the Sphinx and use Ferrystone to teleport to Portcrystal.
Reward: Portcrystal

The Riddle of Wisdom

“The parent knows the child, yet the reverse is far from true. The child knows not the parent: such is the parent’s due. I am a lost child; for kinship do I yearn. So bring to me my “Parent”, that I might better learn.

Reward: 1200 RC (Rift Currency)

Step 1: Place a Portcrystal near the Sphinx

You can use Ferrystone to teleport to Portcrystal you placed at the Sphinx.

Step 2: Go to Riftstone near Harve Village.

Hire a Sphinx Parent/Father/Mother pawn at Riftstone.

Step 3: Offer the pawn as the riddle solution

The Riddle of Conviction

“Life is an enigma – a lender of mortal debt. Yet lighter pack makes fleeter foot and challenge nimbly met. So grant to me what you most prize, and thence elude your pondrous demise.

Presenting any item to Sphinx. Sphinx will duplicate the item as a reward. Recommended to offer a valuable item like Portcrystal.

Reward: The reward is the duplication of the item you provide.

The Riddle of Rumination

“It’s ever the first we keep fond in our breast, and ever the first that eclipses the rest. You know of the Seeker’s Tokens, I trust? Those keepsakes of a fondly remembered journey? Yet where was it that you found your first? Retrace your steps, if you can – you might make a new discovery. Seven days, shall we say, ere you return? May your journey be a pleasant one.

Sphinx is asking you to go back to the very spot where you picked up your first Seeker Token. There you will find a Finder’s Token instead of Seeker Token. Tracking this isn’t possible; you must remember which one you discovered first and return to it.

Reward: 3 x Ferrystones

Finding Second Sphinx Location

After solving the initial five riddles, the Sphinx departs to a new location. Players can either climb onto its back as it leaves and ride it to the new spot or directly head to the “Frontier Shrine” by navigating through the river westward from the Checkpoint Rest Town.

The Riddle of Reunion

The 6th riddle is automatically solved once the player finds the Sphinx at the Frontier Shrine. Refer to the location on the map above.
Reward: 100,000 G.

The Riddle of Futility

“How easily the mind unravels! Some say it’s pain that does it best, others darkness – but I say neither. Rather, I say a mind cannot be more soundly broken than when it beholds its earnest efforts laid low in a single stroke. Could your survive such despair? We shall see. Here I have an amphora destine for Ser Maurits in Battahl. Deliver it to him, but beware; it’s rather fragile.”

This time a player needs to deliver a fragile vase to an NPC in Bakbattahl. Instead of delivering the vase to an NPC, it’s rather easier to bring the NPC to Frontier Shrine.

Just place a Portcrystal near Sphinx. Head north of the town to Bakbattahl to reach the “Mural Byway” area. Here, you’ll find a lone and old NPC (named Maurits) standing in front of the mural. Pick him up then use a Ferrytone to teleport back to the Portcrystal at the Sphinx.

The Riddle of Differentiation

“So vast is the world, and full of life; you are but one of many. Indeed, in the grand scheme, we are as distinct from one another as pebbles on a beach – yet we do so love to extol our differences. But are these differences so great? If you believe so, this next task should prove exceedingly simple. I seek this man. If men are so distinct, I’m sure you’ll find him in a trice.”

Sphinx will show you a picture of an NPC and instruct you to bring him. Pay attention to whether the character’s hair is straight or curly. There are two NPCs with identical faces. They are both at Checkpoint Rest Town, and Dante has straight hair, whereas Vergil has curly hair.

Reward: Whimsical Daydream

Dante Location: During the daytime, he walks near the north entrance of Checkpoint Rest Town, often walking outside the shops.

Vergil Location: During the day, Vergil walks in the southern part of town, near Oxcart Station south of the gate.

The Riddle of Recollection

“Now, questions beget questions, and I have one for you. How many riddles have you solved thus far? My memory fails me, you see. Remind me, and make it plain. Let yonder statues be your means. For every question aptly answered, bring one here before me.”

Speak with the Sphinx at the Frontier Shrine. To solve the Riidle, pick up and throw the statues in front of the Sphinx for all the correct answers that you have given.
Reward: Unmaking Arrow

The Riddle of Contest

“Though ours is a battle of wits, tests of mettle are more to your strength. Is that not so? Come, try your arm – though he shall be your opponent, not I. However, I am not one to be amused by a simple duel. Bear this ring into battle, that I might gauge your true strength.”

Reward: Ring of Ambition

In this riddle, you have to defeat an enemy that appears to the right of the Sphinx. Sphinx will immediately equip you with a ring that causes you to do almost no harm. Simply grab the enemy and chuck him down the cliff to kill him.

Defeat the Sphinx

After you’ve solved all of the riddles, first equip Archer Vocation and equip Unmaking Arrow.

Talk to the Sphinx, and she’ll attempt to fly away. Quickly attack her to start the boss fight. To kill her, equip the Unmaking Arrow from your inventory and shoot her in the leg. You must kill her in order to obtain the key she drops (Key of Sagacity); else, she will fly away.

Use the key on the large gold chest behind her to get Eternal Wakestone. This item is required for the Reaper’s Scorn trophy.
