Elden ring is the latest Souls Game released by FromSoftware on 25th February 2022. Like any other Souls Game, Elden Ring too is pretty difficult. The game becomes particularly tougher when you are playing solo. To ease up the combat a little, the game gives you the option to summon spirit companions to help you out in difficult areas. They can be unlocked pretty early in the game. In fact, unlocking Spirit companions is one of the first things you need to do in the game if you are playing solo. To unlock spirit companions, you will need to unlock the horse first. This guide shows how to unlock the horse and spirit companions in the game as quickly as you can.
How to get Horse
You can get the horse early in the game even without engaging in any combat. To get the horse, you will need to rest at three sites of grace in the open world (Sites of grace inside caves & Dungeons don’t count). The simplest three sites of grace in Limgrave that you can rest at are marked in the picture below. You can reach these three places without even having to engage in combat.
As soon as you enter Limgrave, you will see the first site of grace next to an NPC as shown below. Go north from here and the second one will be inside a ruined church kind of structure as shown below. From there, go further north and you will find the third site of grace in the Gatefront as shown in the second picture below.
Upon resting on the third site of grace, an NPC named Melina will appear and give you Spectral Steel Whistle, which you can use to summon your Steed. The Spectral Steel Whistle will go to your inventory. Open the inventory and use the ring to summon your horse. You can also add the ring to your Pouch. By doing this you will be able to summon your horse without having to open the inventory.
How to Summon Spirits
Once you have unlocked the horse, rest on a Site of Grace and change the time to Night. Then fast-travel back to the Church of Elleh and you will find Witch Renna sitting on the wall there as shown in the pictures below. If Witch Renna, does not appear for you, then fast-travel to another Site of Grace and fast-travel back to the Church of Elleh. This did the trick for us.
Talk to WItch Renna. She will ask you whether you have the power to call forth the spectral steed named Torrent. Respond with “I can call the spectral steed” and she will give you Spirit Calling Bell & Lone Wolf Ashes.
Add the Lone Wolf Ashes to your Pouch as shown below. Then you will be able to summon the spirits for help during difficult combats.
One thing to note is that you won’t be able to summon spirits anytime and anywhere you want. You will be able to summon spirits, only when you get the white icon on the left side of the screen as shown in the picture below. This icon only appears when there is a boss or difficult enemies nearby. Summoning typically consumes FP. You can only summon one type of spirit at a time and you won’t be able to summon during multiplayer.
